Thanks so much for taking the time to learn a little bit more about me.
I have been teaching Tagalog since 2008, and it is so rewarding. I am amazed by how much I actually learn about the language while I am teaching. Everyday brings new and exciting things. I am blessed to be able to do something I LOVE to do.
I have wonderful friends and family members who let me constantly harass them
for help making study materials for my students (and help me teach too).
This me and my mommy.

When I'm not teaching, working on new materials or reading up on how to teach second languages, I catch up with my friends and my tv shows. I like Modern Family, Fresh Off the Boat (shout-out to Asian families on TV!), Scandal, and The Profit. I also love taking pictures, riding horses, and watching documentary films. |
And I love cupcakes!
I started teaching when I jokingly agreed to teach someone Tagalog to help raise money for my dream of building a community center in the Philippines. He said OK, and I didn't think anything of the small talk after then. Then about a week later he said he had ten people who wanted to learn too! So with no materials and very little experience teaching Tagalog, I started with him and ten others in my office's conference room. No worksheets, no dry erase board. Just me. And Tagalog With Kirby was born.
It has been quite a journey with my students, and some have been with me for years. When we were in New York, we jumped from office space to office space, I even had a class once in a space that had a party going on at the same time! It was funny and frustrating at the same time, but I am glad my students always thought the class was worth the hassle. Now, TWK has evolved to an online program which has allowed us to reach students from all over the US, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia! It has truly been a blessing. There have been times when life got in the way, and made progress slow, but I never stopped. The joy, relief, and gratitude of my students never allowed me to give it up.
It is truly a joy for me to be an instrument in connecting family, friends, and loved ones.
Big thanks always go to my students for always inspiring me to keep doing this every single day.
MARAMING MARAMING SALAMAT!
